What Is Demi-Fine Jewellery? Meaning, Materials and Care

Demi-fine jewellery has become the everyday choice for college, office and weekend wear across India. It looks like gold, costs a fraction of it, and is made better than the fast-fashion pieces that fade in a month. Here is what the term means, what the pieces are made of, and how to keep them shining for longer.

What does demi-fine jewellery mean?

Demi-fine sits between fashion (costume) jewellery and fine jewellery.

What are demi-fine pieces made of?

  • 18K gold-plated brass. A brass base coated in 18-karat gold. It gives a warm gold colour, keeps pieces light, and is the base of our demi-fine collection.
  • Gold vermeil. Gold plating over sterling silver, usually thicker than standard plating. In the US, vermeil must be at least 2.5 microns of 10K or higher gold over sterling silver.
  • 925 sterling silver. 92.5% pure silver mixed with other metals, usually copper, for strength. It is a precious metal in its own right. See our 925 silver gemstone rings.
  • Stones. Demi-fine pieces may use natural gemstones such as amethyst, turquoise and onyx, or zircon and crystals for sparkle.

Is demi-fine jewellery worth it?

Yes, if you want to wear jewellery every day. It is affordable enough to buy several styles, trend-led, and good enough to gift.

It is not an investment. Plating wears with friction and time, and plated jewellery does not hold resale value like gold. Sterling silver is the exception: it is a precious metal and can be cleaned or re-plated.

How to care for gold-plated jewellery so it doesn’t fade

  1. Last on, first off. Put jewellery on after perfume, body lotion and hairspray, and take it off first at night.
  2. Keep it dry. Remove it before a bath, a swim or the gym. Water, soap and sweat wear plating faster.
  3. Wipe after wearing. A soft, dry microfibre cloth removes sweat and oils.
  4. Store pieces separately. Use the pouch it came in or a small zip bag so pieces don’t scratch each other.
  5. Beat the humidity. In the monsoon, add a silica gel sachet to your jewellery box.
  6. Skip harsh cleaners. Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, bleach and ultrasonic cleaners on plated pieces.
  7. Clean gently when needed. A quick dip in lukewarm water with mild soap, then dry immediately and completely.
  8. Rotate your pieces. Wearing the same pair daily wears its plating fastest.

Every demi-fine piece from Jewels Desire carries a tarnish warranty. If a piece turns black, write to us with your order number, and you may be eligible for store credit.

How to care for 925 silver jewellery

  • Expect some darkening. Silver reacts with sulphur in the air and slowly darkens; this is normal, not a defect.
  • Polish with a silver cloth. A few strokes bring back the shine.
  • Store it airtight. A zip bag or anti-tarnish pouch slows darkening.
  • Treat soft stones gently. Turquoise and opal are delicate; keep them out of water and away from chemicals.

Frequently asked questions

Is demi-fine jewellery real gold? Not solid gold. Gold-plated and vermeil pieces have a layer of real gold on top of brass or silver.

Does demi-fine jewellery tarnish? Plating can fade over time, especially with water, sweat and perfume. Good care slows this a lot, and our demi-fine pieces carry a tarnish warranty.

Can I wear gold-plated jewellery in the shower? It is better not to. Water and soap wear the plating faster, so take your jewellery off before bathing.

Is 925 silver better than gold-plated brass? They suit different needs. Sterling silver is a precious metal that can be polished for years; gold-plated brass gives a warm gold look at a lower price.

How often should I clean gold-plated jewellery? Wipe it after each wear and wash it gently only when it looks dull.
