How to Identify Real 925 Silver

How to Identify Real 925 Sterling Silver: A Buyer's Guide

Silver has rarely been in more demand in India. With gold at record levels, more families now choose silver for gifts, festivals and everyday jewellery, and more sellers are calling their pieces "silver". Knowing what you are paying for takes a few minutes. This guide explains what 925 means, how to read stamps and hallmarks, and seven simple checks you can do yourself.

What does 925 sterling silver mean?

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is too soft to hold a gemstone or keep its shape as a ring, so the small amount of copper gives it strength without changing its colour. The number 925 simply means 925 parts of silver in every 1,000. You may also see it written as 92.5.

Sterling silver vs fine, plated, German and oxidised silver

Type What it is Real silver content How it ages
Fine silver (999) 99.9% pure silver 99.9% Very soft; used more for coins and bars than jewellery
925 sterling silver 92.5% silver with 7.5% other metals 92.5% Tarnishes slowly and polishes back to bright
Silver-plated A thin layer of silver over brass or copper Very little Plating wears through, showing yellow or reddish metal
German silver (nickel silver) Copper, nickel and zinc None, despite the name Looks grey or yellowish with wear
Oxidised silver A darkened finish, not a metal Depends on the metal underneath Ask what the base metal is before you buy

Much of the "oxidised jewellery" sold in markets is German silver or another base metal with a dark finish. That is fine for fashion pieces, as long as you know what you are buying.

Stamps and hallmarks: what to look for

Maker's stamps

Many silver pieces carry a small stamp such as 925, S925, 92.5 or STERLING, usually inside a ring band, near a clasp or on the back of a pendant. A stamp is the maker's claim. It is useful, but on its own it is not proof.

The BIS hallmark

In India, hallmarking of silver jewellery is still voluntary, although the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is working towards making it mandatory. Since September 2025, any silver article that is hallmarked must carry the BIS logo with the word SILVER, its purity grade (for example 925) and a six-digit HUID code. You can check that code in the free BIS CARE app using its Verify HUID option.

Seven checks before and after you buy

  1. Read the listing. A trustworthy listing names the metal as 925 sterling silver, gives the weight and names the gemstone. Vague words such as "silver tone" or "silver colour" usually mean plated or base metal.
  2. Find the stamp or hallmark. Use your phone camera's zoom to read small marks inside a band or on a clasp.
  3. Try a magnet. Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet pulls the piece firmly, it contains iron, steel or nickel. A piece that ignores the magnet is not proven to be silver, because brass and copper ignore magnets too.
  4. Look at worn edges. On plated pieces, edges and the inside of a ring wear first and show a yellow or reddish metal underneath. Sterling silver is the same colour all the way through.
  5. Do the white cloth test. Rub the piece gently with a soft white cloth. Real silver that has tarnished leaves grey or black marks. Plated silver can do this too, so treat it as a hint, not a verdict.
  6. Do the ice test. Silver conducts heat better than any other metal. An ice cube placed on a larger silver piece melts noticeably faster than one on steel or glass. It works best on heavier items such as bangles.
  7. Ask for a professional test. A jeweller with an XRF machine, or a BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre, can measure purity without damaging the piece. This is the only check that gives a definite answer.

Avoid at home: bleach, acid kits, scratching or biting. They can damage the piece and the gemstone, and the results are hard to read.

Does real silver tarnish?

Yes, and that is a good sign. Silver reacts slowly with sulphur in the air, sweat and some foods, forming a thin dark layer called tarnish. It wipes away with a silver polishing cloth. Wearing your silver often, storing it in a zip pouch and keeping it away from perfume and household cleaners all slow it down.

Buying silver online: a five-point checklist

  • The metal is stated as 925 sterling silver, not "silver tone".
  • The listing gives the weight of the piece.
  • The gemstone is named, and so is whether it is natural.
  • The seller has a clear return and refund policy.
  • Shipping and payment terms are written down before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is 92.5 silver real silver?

Yes. 92.5 and 925 mean the same thing: 92.5% pure silver. It is the international standard for silver jewellery.

Is 925 silver good for daily wear?

Yes. Sterling silver is strong enough for rings and pendants worn every day. Take it off before swimming, bathing or cleaning, and polish it now and then.

Will 925 silver turn my skin green?

Occasionally. The copper in sterling silver can react with sweat or lotion and leave a faint green or dark mark on some people. It washes off, and keeping the piece clean and dry helps.

Is silver hallmarking mandatory in India?

Not yet. Silver hallmarking is voluntary, but a hallmarked piece must carry a six-digit HUID that you can verify in the BIS CARE app.

What is German silver?

German silver, also called nickel silver, is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc. It contains no silver at all.

Does real silver stick to a magnet?

No. If a piece is strongly attracted to a magnet, it is not solid silver. A piece that ignores a magnet still needs other checks.

How do I verify a silver HUID?

Download the BIS CARE app, choose Verify HUID and enter the six-digit code from the hallmark. The app shows the details recorded for that article.
