Why gold-plated costs so much less than gold

In October 2026, 24K gold cost about ₹14,800 a gram, while silver cost roughly ₹230 a gram, more than 60 times less. A gold-plated piece uses only a very thin layer of gold, so its price reflects design and craftsmanship rather than metal. That is why a pair of statement earrings can cost less than ₹2,000 while still delivering a convincing gold finish.

What about gold vermeil and gold-plated silver?

Gold vermeil is sterling silver with a thicker layer of gold on top. In the United States, trade rules reserve the word vermeil for sterling silver with gold of at least 10K and at least 2.5 microns thick. It sits between our two lines: silver underneath, gold on the surface. Our gold-plated range is made on brass, not silver, which keeps prices lower; our silver range is solid 925 sterling.

Which should you choose for each occasion?

Occasion Our pick Why
Office and daily wear Silver rings and pendants, or small gold-plated studs Light, understated and easy to wear all day
Weddings and festivals Gold-plated sets, jhumkas and chandbalis Big, photogenic designs at a fraction of the cost of gold
Dhanteras Sterling silver A genuine precious metal for a day traditionally marked by buying metal
Gemstone jewellery Sterling silver Stones set in precious metal, in hundreds of designs
Gifts under ₹500 Gold-plated studs or chain, or a gemstone bracelet Thoughtful and affordable

Wearing both together

Mixing metals is now a deliberate style choice rather than a mistake. A silver gemstone ring with gold-plated hoops, or a gold-plated chain layered with a silver pendant, looks considered when one metal leads and the other accents. Repeat the second metal once elsewhere in your look so it feels intentional.

How to make each one last

Gold-plated jewellery

  • Put it on after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
  • Remove it before bathing, swimming or exercise.
  • Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and store each piece separately.

Sterling silver jewellery

  • Wear it often; regular wear slows tarnish.
  • Polish with a silver cloth, gently around porous stones such as turquoise and opal.
  • Store it in a zip pouch away from humidity.

Frequently asked questions

Which lasts longer, gold-plated or sterling silver?

Sterling silver, because it is the same metal all the way through and can be polished back to bright. Gold plating wears with time and friction; how long it lasts depends on how often you wear it and how you care for it.

Does gold plating come off?

Gradually, yes, especially where a piece rubs against skin or clothing. Keeping it dry and away from chemicals slows the wear, and a jeweller can re-plate a favourite piece.

Can I shower or swim wearing them?

We recommend taking off both before showering or swimming. Water, soap and chlorine speed up plating wear and tarnish, and can harm porous gemstones.

Is gold-plated silver better than gold-plated brass?

Gold-plated silver costs more because the base is a precious metal, and when the gold wears, silver rather than brass shows underneath. Gold-plated brass gives the same look for less, which suits trend and festive pieces.

Which is better for sensitive skin?

It depends on what your skin reacts to. We do not label any piece hypoallergenic. If you have a known metal allergy, check the base metal before buying and ask a dermatologist which metals suit you.

Does silver jewellery have resale value?

Some. Buyers usually pay for the silver weight, often minus a deduction, and nothing extra for design or gemstones. Gold-plated jewellery has no metal resale value.

Which makes a better gift?

Silver for a lasting keepsake or a birthstone gift; gold-plated for a festive or statement gift. If you are unsure of size, choose earrings, a pendant or a bracelet.
